Gavrilo Princip

" In trying to insinuate that someone else has instigated the assassination, one strays from the truth. The idea arose in our own minds, and we ourselves executed it. We have loved the people. I have nothing to say in my defense."

In June 1914, Gavrilo Princip and six co-conspirators accomplished their goal of assassinating the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. At the time, 19 year old Princip was part of a Serbian terrorist organization called The Black Hand. This organization trained guerillas, saboteurs, and arranged political murders. Originally, The Black Hand took over the actions of Narodna Odbrana. It was in 1914 that Princip, Cabrinovic, and Grabez were recruited to The Black Hand by Major Tanksovic, one of the leaders. They were smuggled over the border into Bosnia with the help of a chain of underground-railroad style contacts. The three had been trained by The Black Hand in bomb throwing and marksmanship.
