Joanie's Closet

Our Mission

Joanie's Closet is a non-profit organization serving under-resourced District 95 students and their families, in collaboration with the community, by providing basic needs to help students achieve their full potential.

Background

Joanie's Closet was founded in the spirit of May Whitney Elementary School's long time nurse, Joanie Bednarz, who passed away unexpectedly in August of 2005.  Joanie was well known for her humanitarianism and generosity, especially toward May Whitney families in need.  In the fall or 2009, Joanie's Closet became a district-wide initiative, able to serve students and their families across District 95's eight schools.  Joanie's Closet was officially made a Restricted fund under the School District 95 Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.

How we serve families in need

Joanie's Closet provides assistance with immediate needs for our District 95 students and their families.  Examples include: gas cards, grocery cards, school supplies, backpacks, snacks for hungry students, winter coats, snow pants, assistance with medical-related needs and more.
