The Reading Olympics program was designed to improve the quantity of literature chosen by fifth graders during independent reading time. Students are supplied with a list of quality literature in a variety of genres. These books were chosen to supplement curricular units, broaden point of view, and introduce the students to outstanding children's authors. Students read the books and then record a response about the book. A big thank you to Mrs. Kuehl who helped us update our list.
Battle of the Books and Ela Library's Kid Picks can also be read for Reading Olympics and each child has a copy of both of these lists. My goal is to have students reading everyday. If you find that your child seems to be struggling with the selections, please contact me so that I can provide an alternate book list and give you some ideas to help your child in their reading. One way you can help your child with their reading is by taking an active interest in the books they are reading. Please talk about the books with your child before signing the response.
Each month students will be expected to read independently as a part of their reading grade. The total number of pages read determines this grade. Parents need to read the response and sign it to verify the pages read. At the end of each month, the pages will be counted as a part of the trimester reading grade. Newsletters will inform you of the due date ahead of time. Credit will only be given if the parent signatures are present. Responses turned in without signatures are considered late assignments. At the end of the year, medals will be awarded for the total number of books read.
