Math: Currently, we are studying different geometry concepts. We are working through chapters nine and ten.
Social Studies: Students are reading through chapter ten. Chapter Ten is all about forming a new government. The following are the three main ideas of this chapter: 1. The new nation struggled to govern itself under the Articles of Confederation. 2. At the Constitutional Convention, a group of leaders wrote the Constitution, a new plan for a stronger national government. 3. After a long debate, the states ratified the United States Constitution. The children are also learning how to orienteer using a map and compass.
Science: We are now studying different aspects of the ecosystem. The children are also learning about wolves and birds in preparation for Lorado Taft.
Language Arts: Students are learning about pronouns. We are also creating many expository essays.
Reading: This month, the fifth graders are reading novels that relate to environmental topics. The novels we are using are: My Side of the Mountain, Wolf Brother, Hoot, and A Week in the Woods. With these novels, students will be working on vocabulary development, comprehension, and other reading skills. Students are also expected to read daily independently for Reading Olympics. Students also have the opportunity to find examples of figurative language in their reading and add a marble to the Read-in jar.
