In this unit students are presented with the concepts of divergent thinking. Divergent thinking is necessary in many professions and is a vital part of the problem-solving process. Isabel the Inventor uses divergent thinking strategies as she brainstorms and invents. This reinforces the inventive side of divergent thinking which includes brainstorming and seeing ordinary objects in new and unusual ways.

Another character, Yolanda the Yarnspinner, helps us to use divergent thinking strategies as a way to create colorful stories. Students are encouraged to brainstorm and use words creatively to add richness to their writing. In creating their work pictures, students will be exposed to  similes and metaphors.

With Divergent Thinking:

• Predictions are made using flexibility of thought or brainstorming

• A pattern or strategy is devised

• Information is synthesized to create an original ending

• Visual clues are incorporated in solutions

A student demonstrating divergent thinking:

• Offers many ideas
• Elaborates (They add details that may not occur to others or piggyback on other  ideas.)
• Display a sense of humor
• Offers original ideas (Their responses are very different and can “stop you in your tracks.”)
• Has the ability to change course (They are able to start new categories or change their perspective.)
• Use an advanced vocabulary (They sound very adult in the way they express themselves.)
