Reading

Today's Assignment:

Read, read, read for at least 20 minutes each day!

  • READ, READ, READ!
  • Reading improves your vocabulary, your grammar, your spelling, your sentence structure, and your knowledge of the world, as well as your IMAGINATION!
  • Have a good book to read at school each and every day!
  • Read independently for 20 minutes every night before bed!
  • Reading Olympics journals for each month are due on the first school day of the following month. (This year's exception is October!) They count towards your letter grade.  They should ALWAYS be signed by a parent! I would like you to read at least one book from the Reading Olympics, Kid Picks, or Battle of the Books lists each month, but you may read others as long as I approve them in advance.

 Language Arts

Today's Assignment:

  • You will receive your regular spelling list every Monday.  The daily assignments are on the back of the list.  There are 3 assignments--one due Tuesday, one due Wednesday, and one due Thursday.
  • You will receive your challenge list every Tuesday.  The assignments will vary each week.  Watch the assignment board!
  • Everyone must do the homework for both the regular and the challenge lists.
  • You are in charge of your own destiny! You, the student, may choose which spelling test you would like to take on Friday of each week.
  • Language Arts assignments will vary.  Watch the assignment board!
  • Spelling, grammar, and punctuation will be assessed across curriculum.  Use what you learn!
                

Social Studies

Today's Assignment:

  • Geoquests are assigned every Monday and are due every  Friday.  They are homework, although you may work on them at school during free time.
  • We will study approximately one chapter per month in the S.S. textbook.  For each lesson of the chapter you will have a worksheet as well as comprehension questions.  You will always have two schooldays to complete the comprehension questions.
  • You may expect a comprehensive chapter test towards the end of each month as we conclude each chapter.
  • There will be occasional reports or projects assigned throughout the year.  Stay tuned!

                                Math

Today's Assignment:

Practice your math facts every day!               

  • Math will take place every day from 9:45-10:45 a.m.  Participants in the pull-out program will meet with Mrs. Raineri at this time. The 5th grade will meet in flexible groups for each unit.
  • Practice your math facts every evening!  It will make 5th grade so much easier!
  • We will participate in the Otter Creek math facts program daily.
  • We will have a math assignment almost every day.
  • The class will have approximately 20 minutes each day to work on their homework assignment.  During this time I will work with individuals and small groups to reinforce the lesson.
  • Use your SRA Real Math login and password to refer to the online textbook, read the tutorials, and play the online games.
  • Our daily "Blast from the Past" will help you master and retain concepts learned throughout the year.
  • Our "Graphing Question of the Day" will help you convert fractions to decimals, percents and ratios!

Science

Today's Assignment:

Pack for Taft!

  • The students will work with partners to complete a study guide for each science unit. 
  • They may expect a set of ten comprehension questions for each unit.  They will always receive two school days to complete this assignment.
  • The students may expect a vocabulary quiz on each unit lesson.
  • There will be no comprehensive unit tests except for the Human Growth and Development Unit in May.
  • There will be occasional research reports or projects assigned throughout the year. Stay tuned!
