Public Comment at Board Meetings

The Board of Education welcomes public comment at its meetings. Any community member wishing to address the Board may contact Marsha Smyser before the meeting at 847-540-4963 or sign in prior to the start of the meeting.

The public comments section of the meeting is the official time devoted to comments by community members. The Board typically hears public comments at this time and generally does not engage in dialogue, but will take the comments under advisement and respond where necessary in a timely manner.  In cases where the subject of the comment would better addressed by a member of the staff, that staff member will contact the speaker.

All speakers who wish to address the Board during this time will identify themselves before they speak. Comments will be limited to five minutes per individual.  In order to allow for the most efficient use of meeting time, if there are several speakers addressing the same topic, no more than 30 minutes of total time will be allowed for that topic.

Comments should be in good taste and demonstrate consideration for others.  Comments regarding specific individuals or personnel matters are inappropriate.

According to the Illinois School Code, items such as those dealing with personnel, student discipline, the purchase or sale of land, and litigation may only be addressed in closed session by the Board of Education. Generally, closed sessions are held at the end of the regular meeting.   If  there a need for further deliberations on a topic that is scheduled for action at that meeting, a closed session will be held prior to the regular business meeting.

                                      Who Else Can I Contact?

While anyone is welcome to speak to the Board of Education, please keep in mind that there are also other channels available to individuals who have a question or concern.
A classroom question or concern should be discussed with the classroom teacher.  If the issue is not resolved at the classroom level, the issue may be brought to the attention of the principal.
A school-level question or concern should be discussed with the principal (or department chair at the High School).  If the issue is not resolved at the school level, the issue may be brought to the attention of an associate or assistant superintendent.
A district-wide question should be discussed with an associate or assistant superintendent, or the director of communications and community relations.  If the issue is not resolved, the issue may be brought to the attention of the superintendent.
