Dear Parents and Students,

My name is Kevin Condon and I want to welcome you to Honors Geometry.   I hope to make clear my expectations so we can work together towards your student’s success.

Students will need:

  3-ring notebook and paper

•Calculator (Please see http://www.lz95.org/lzhs/Math/calculator.htm

     for information about suggested calculators.

Pencils and a blue or black pen

Homework must be done in pencil and corrected in pen.  Work done in ink will be marked down. Each homework paper is to have name, date, and assignment in the upper left hand corner.  Completed assignments are to be kept in your 3-ring notebook.

Assignment guides outlining each chapter are given to every student and are on-line at http://www.lz95.org/lzhs/Math/kcondon/ag_home.htm .  You can use this to keep updated when your student is absent or falls behind.   Students are expected to keep their copy in their binder.  You should make a copy to keep at home and keep track of your student’s progress.  I will be following the curriculum plan which is outlined in the math department web-site.

Grades for my class are calculated on a total point system with grades being calculated as a percentage of the total points given in each quarter. Each homework assignment is scored on a 3 point scale. If a student misses an assignment due to negligence or choice that assignment must be made up but the unpunctuality will cause the grade to be penalized.  If a student does poorly on an assignment they may redo the assignment and earn two out of the three points.  If an assignment is missed due to an excused absence, the student is eligible for the full points given to the assignment without penalty.

Tests and Quizzes are the other components of your student’s grade.  Quizzes wil l range from 15 to 35 points.  Tests will be given only at the end of each chapter and will be worth approximately 100 points each.

Grades will follow the LZHS policy and will not be rounded up.  Semester grades will be calculated according to LZHS policy with each quarter weighing 40% of the grade and the semester exam weighing 20%.

If a student is having difficulties or wishes to seek extra assistance I can be reached through the new Math/Science Resource Center for assistance.  Success can be had through good planning, perseverance, and performance.  I suggest students take careful notes, complete homework daily, participate productively in classroom discussions and activities, and especially ask questions when they have them.

On-line help is available in the form of worksheets.  These are available at http://www.lz95.org/lzhs/Math/kcondon/worksheets/HGEO_WSEP.htm.  This site includes the answers so you and your student can check your work.  If a student needs additional help there are some services available at LZHS.  The Math-Science Resource center is staffed with a fully credentialed, experienced math teacher.  Hours and information are found at http://www.lz95.org/lzhs/Math/faculty/resource.htm.

I plan to send home, through your student, and through e-mail, progress reports that detail your student’s performance.  This is my effort to keep you informed in addition to using proficiency/deficiency notices and report cards.

I look forward to the coming year and I am very excited to be a part of Lake Zurich High School.  Communication between parent and teacher is important.  Should you have questions please call 847-438-5155 ext. 4490 and speak to me or make an appointment for a conference.

Sincerely,

Kevin Condon
