COURSE OF STUDY

 

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Adult Living is a one semester course for seniors only, with no prerequisites.  The purpose of this course is to help prepare the students for life in the adult world.  Special areas of study include personality traits, self-concept, goals, values, decision making, parenting, communication, and relationships.  Students will learn how to search for an apartment and practice budgeting procedures to help prepare for the day they move out on their own. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

 

1.      There are daily assignments in Adult Living, the majority of which are completed during class.  Each assignment will include participation points.  The student must be in class in order to receive these points.

 

2.      Students will be required to write journal entries throughout our units of study. 

 

3.      Class discussions and small group work are important components of the class.

 

 

 

 

 

OBJECTIVES

 

1.      Identify some of your own personal values and learn how those values were acquired and influenced by those around you.

2.      Learn how self-image is developed and how to improve one’s self-image.

3.      Learn healthy strategies to achieve and maintain a positive attitude.

4.      Learn steps and strategies for problem solving and decision making.

5.      Research the purchasing of a car, renting an apartment, and budgeting out expenses for a month.

6.      Plan a fantasy vacation, calculating the cost for travel, food, lodging and entertainment.

7.      Master the care of a Real Care baby during the parenting simulation.

8.      Reflect on personal readiness for parenting through discussion and personal reflection.

9.      Learn positive ways to communicate with others to promote positive relationships.

10. Describe factors which are important in choosing a dating partner and the value of dating as a preparation for marriage.

11. Learn how various cultural and family patterns affect relationships.

12. Identify ways the engagement period helps prepare couples for married life.

13. Research the various components for planning a wedding.

The comprehensive final will be 20% of the semester grade.  The grading scale is as follows:

 

                        90  - 100% = A

                        80  -   89% = B

                        70  -   79% = C

                        60  -   69% = D

 

 

REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS

 

The students who successfully complete this course will be better prepared to move into the adult world.  They will have a good understanding of who they are and what they want to accomplish in life.  They will have the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships.  This will be important in both the work place and in their personal lives.
