COURSE DESCRIPTION

Home Economics I is a one semester course offered primarily to freshmen and sophomores.  The course is designed to give the students an overview of the Home Economics curriculum.  The course offers students the opportunity to explore and develop abilities in food preparation, personal relationships, child development and basic sewing skills.  The course material will be studied in an activity-oriented laboratory environment. 

 

OBJECTIVES

Food and Nutrition

The student will …..

·        Recognize proper kitchen safety procedures

·        Learn proper sanitation procedures

·        Learn cooking terms, equivalents and units of measure

·        Acquire knowledge in kitchen safety

·        Learn the basic nutrients, about healthy diets and understand the food pyramid guidelines

·        Identify kitchen equipment

·        Prepare recipes following directions

·        Demonstrate proper table setting

·        Learn the principles of table manners and social etiquette

 

 

Personal Relationships

The student will…

·        Learn how to set and achieve goals and to maintain values

·        Practice time management and decision making skills

·        Learn factors that affect personality

·        Learn how self concept develops, how to improve self-image and how to maintain a positive attitude

·         

 

Child Development

The student will…

·        Learn the basic principles of development

·        Learn about the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of children

·        Learn about the proper care of infants

·        Learn about the aspects of parenting through the egg baby project

 

 

            

 

Clothing

The student will…

·        Learn to recognize and use sewing equipment

·        Learn basic sewing techniques including hand stitching and sewing on a button

·        Learn the parts and basic operation of the sewing machine

·        Construct 2 sewing projects in class

 

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

·        Students will be expected to participate in class discussions

·        A variety of assignments will be completed during class time

·        Homework assignments will be turned in on time for full credit

·        Quizzes will be given on a regular basis

·        Final exam will be worth 20% of the final semester grade

 

EVALUATION

·        Make-up work must be turned in by date indicated

·        All points are totaled at the end of the marking period to determine final grade

·        Grading scale is listed below  NO ROUNDING UP

90 – 100 = A         70 – 79 = C

80 -  89  = B         60 -  69
