REALITY INTERVIEWS

A core service of the Career Advisory Council is the organization of interviewing sessions for students in Lake Zurich High School’s Consumer Education classes. Volunteers from area businesses and organizations volunteer their time to conduct these simulated job interviews for students.

The goal of this process is to provide students with a realistic and educational interviewing experience, along with feedback that allows them to improve their interview techniques and responses.  The interview process takes place each fall and spring.

Nearly 200 students took part in a two-day mock interview training experience coordinated at the Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich on October 15 and 22, 2008.  This  interview training is designed to help the students prepare for the types of interviews they will face when applying for employment or college admissions. Business professionals throughout the area will take time from their busy work schedules to provide this “real-world” interviewing experience for the Juniors and Seniors in Consumer Education classes at Lake Zurich High School. By enlisting the help of business and academic professionals, students will learn what today’s employers are looking for when hiring.

Prior to the "reality interviews", Consumer Education teachers conduct Career Weeks during which students are trained in resume, cover letter, and job application writing.  Handouts are distributed explaining interview techniques, dress code, and lists of sample questions the student should expect to hear during their interview and those which they should practice asking interviewers.

VOLUNTEERING AS AN INTERVIEWER

Several weeks before the Ela Library interviews take place on March 11 and 18, 2009, members of the Interview Committee will begin emailing those who have volunteered as interviewers in the past, soliciting their participation for the upcoming event.

Volunteers can sign up online through a scheduling tool known as Doodle.  A sample of the Doodle used for the October 2008 interviews can be viewed at this website:   http://www.doodle.com/participation.html?pollId=nc4dcksbwdp342u7

The current Doodle link will be included in the message inviting you to participate in the March, 2009 interviews.
