Welcome to English II!  This year you will study a wide variety of literature including poetry, short stories, novels, and other works. You will develop the skills necessary to read, analyze, write about, and interpret these works, as well as discuss how they reflect different aspects of the world’s culture and history.  Below are my classroom policies.  If you ever have any questions, please see me as soon as possible and we will make sure that everything is handled clearly and fairly.  I look forward to a successful year with you!

Grades:

The following grading scale will be used:

A+: 97-100% A: 93-96.9% A-: 90-92.9%

B+: 87-89.9% B: 83-86.9% B-: 80-82.9%

C+: 77-79.9% C: 73-76.9% C-: 70-72.9%

D+: 67-69.9% D: 63-66.9% D-: 60-62.9%

Please note that grades will NOT be rounded. For example, 89.7% is a B+, not an A. This is a school-wide policy. Grades will be based on tests, quizzes, homework, papers, projects, and participation.

Behavior:

1.       Be on time.

2.      Be prepared.

3.      Be respectful.

Materials:

Students are required to bring all necessary materials to class every day.  Consistent failure to come to class prepared will be reflected in the final grade.  (Books are to be covered.)
            * Elements of Literature (Holt, Reinhart, Winston) OR Novel
            *Assignment Notebook
            *Binder
*College Ruled Notebook and Loose Leaf Paper
            *Blue/Black/Red Ink Pens and Pencils
            *Computer Disk/Flash Drive for Storage
            *Box of Tissue
*A Book to Read for Pleasure

Homework:

Assignments must be turned in at the beginning of the class period on the announced due date.  Late work will NOT be accepted.  In these instances, school policy will be enforced- i.e. students will be given the number of excused days plus one to make up missed work.

Reading/Homework Quizzes:

In some cases a reading quiz will be given instead of collecting the homework.  You will be allowed to use your homework/notes to complete the quiz.

Make-Up for Tests/Long-Term Projects:

If a student is absent on the day of a quiz or test, the student can make-up the test within the same guidelines before or after school by appointment only. Quizzes and tests must be made up within three days of the absence. This policy does not apply to assignments assigned over an extended period. For example, if a student absent on the day of a final paper collection, or on the day of a project presentation, the student will be responsible for submitting the work on the next day of attendance. Furthermore, in a collaborative project, the present students will perform, and the absent member will perform on the next day of attendance.

(Arranging make-up work is the sole responsibility of the student.)

Miscellaneous:

All assignments, especially formal assignments, must have a heading on the upper left-hand corner of the paper with your name, class, assignment title, and date.  Final paper assignments must be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font and double spaced, with the appropriate heading and a title.   Journal entries are to be written on loose-leaf paper with a date and a title.  Notes are to be taken in a spiral notebook with the date and appropriate title/heading.  Be sure to include page numbers when taking notes. All music devices and cell phones must be off at all times.

Other Policies:

All school rules and policies concerning cheating and plagiarism will be strictly enforced.  Unexcused absences will result in a grade of a 0 for all work collected on day of absence or done during day of absence.  NO exceptions.
