Thoroughly Modern Millie

New York 1992.  Millie Dillmount has just arrived from a small town in Kansas, anxious to start a new life.  She is young, gusty, and enamored with the big city and the "thoroughly modern" promise of glamour, work, love, and intrigue. And marriage (for money) of course. When Millie encounters some fabulous flappers, she decides that it's time for a new look so she bobs her hair and dons her dress with a shorter hemline. Thus begins her topsy-turvy adventure with some unusual characters and circumstances. For starters, there's a mugger who sets Millie's destiny toward the arrogant city slicker, Jimmy Smith; Mrs. Meers, proprietress of a rooming house (Hotel Priscilla) for would-be actresses and leader of a white slavery ring that targets "orphans" who disappearance won't be noticed; Ching Ho and Bun Foo, Mrs. Meers' hilarious Chinese henchmen; Miss Dorothy, a wealthy but old fashioned young beautiful lady thrilled to meet her first poor person, Millie; Trevor Graydon III, Millie's rich boss who she's tagged as a potential husband; and Muzzy Van Hossmere, Manhattan's most celebrated jazz singer. Thoroughly Modern Millie is an upbeat dazzling musical about being young and innocent in the Roaring 20s.
