Excerpts of e-mails and notes received about the band '07-'08

ON THE Jazz Performance 1/12/2007
To the Jazz Ensemble:

On behalf of my company, Power Packaging, let me convey our appreciation to the Jazz Ensemble -- or as I call it the Jazz Orchestra!   The quality and professionalism of the music played for our Holiday Party at Maggiano's last Saturday night was PHENOMENAL. It was perfect! People are constantly coming to me to convey their appreciation; all with 'blown-away' responses. Over and over again, they are stating they were blown away that such depth and quality of great music could come from a high school program. Especially former band members state their bands never, ever sounded so good.      Oh, and thanks for letting me 'pick-up the baton' too.

-Bert Thompson-Power Packaging

ON THE JAZZ CONCERT 5/18/06:

Mr. Thompson and the Jazz Ensembles,     AWESOME!! We just returned home from your Thursday night concert and we were so well-entertained. What an impressive group! We have been enjoying the Ellington CD and are blown away at the depth of performance for a high school group.  Please pass along our thanks and congratulations to the members of the Jazz groups.

Jane Hyla (Teacher at Seth Paine) and Patrick Hyla ( a musician in his own right who is awed by you)

Congratulations on a GREAT Jazz Concert last night. This was by far the best band concert I have seen at LZHS. The selection of music, the addition of vocals, and the performance of both bands were outstanding.  The person or persons who organized and came up with the idea of the show are to also to be congratulated, because all great things start with an idea and build for there. Thank you and the band for and enjoyable evening.

Thanks for another great Jazz Concert, the students were superb. It is amazing to see the growth each year as they get older. Looking forward to Sunday also.

I agree. Good job guys!--Mr. Egan

Good job on the Jazz concert last night. Many of the kids are amazing. It was nice to hear all the successes in IMEA placements. It is a testament to the directors and the music program at LZHS.

Congratulations on a wonderful Jazz concert last evening. The Lab Band, Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo all complimented one another so very well!    I thoroughly enjoyed the evening; what a great testimony to the quality music education our LZ students receive.   Thanks again for a great job!

Excerpts of e-mails and notes received about the jazz bands in '03-'04

The jazz ensemble sent in a tape for comments only (we were not able to get the tape in on time because of the ruptured appendix of our lead tenor player) to the Essentially Ellington Competition this year. The following are the comments from this:  This is by far one of the very best comments-only bands.  They might have been a contender in the competition.  They have major work to do, however if they want to realize their potential. Work on vibrato and sustaining notes as mentioned below. Soloists have to confront the chord changes or learn the original solos.  The tenor soloist is outstanding and should be encouraged. You are on the edge of greatness with this band - don't give up!

Friends of ours was able to see the bands perform at the conservatory. They were impressed with the ability of both bands, as well as the variety of songs performed by the Jazz Ensemble.  Please express my thanks to the parents who helped with all the planning. I know it's a huge undertaking.

If you have something to say about the band, e-mail Josh Thompson
