Orchestras

The orchestra program at LZHS includes two curricular ensembles and one extracurricular group. Each ensemble offers unique opportunities for growth and enjoyment. We believe there is a place for all interested students in the orchestra program at LZHS.

Symphony Orchestra

Symphony Orchestra is the premier performing group in the District 95 orchestra program. Membership is by audition and is open to students in grades 10-12 with prior string playing experience. Emphasis is on building musicianship through the study of historically significant literature for string and full orchestra. Symphony Orchestra members participate in IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest, IHSA Organizational Contest, and IMEA all-district and all-state auditions. String players in the Symphony Orchestra combine with top wind and percussion players from the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band to create a full orchestra experience. Symphony Orchestra rehearses for a full period each school day, and members receive a grade and credit toward graduation.

Concert Orchestra

Concert Orchestra is designed as a training ensemble, in which students enjoy a highly rewarding musical experience while developing the skills necessary for membership in Symphony Orchestra. Membership is open to all students in grades 9-12, and no audition is required, though prior playing experience is necessary. Emphasis is on refining tone, technique, rhythm, and reading skills while studying a diverse array of literature. Concert Orchestra members participate in IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest, IHSA Organizational Contest, and IMEA all-district auditions. Concert Orchestra rehearses for a full period each school day, and members receive a grade and credit toward graduation.
