This team works specifically with individual students experiencing problems related to substance abuse. Case managers will be assigned to students on a rotating basis. The team will provide information and assistance to students and parents regarding the misuse of alcohol and other drugs. The C.I.T. will also provide follow-up, in-school support for students involved in substance abuse when requested. In addition, the team connects students and their families with supportive resources in the school and professional resources in the community. Team members are expected to participate in outside training and workshops during the school year to remain updated on substance abuse issues. Pathways is a six week informational group to address choices and relay information on topics relevant to students involved with drugs or alcohol. The groups consist of stand alone weekly topics that allow students to be added to the group at any time during the six week cycle. The group meets weekly. The group is run by a social worker and psychologist . SUPPORT PROCEDURES 1. The Chemical Intervention Team will meet when a referral is received from the core team due to suspected substance abuse issues. A C.I.T. Case Manager will be assigned at that meeting to distribute the SAP forms, collect the information and reconvene the team once the information is gathered. - Action plan is determined. - If there is no evidence other than one teacher’s report: The case manager will review results with the referral resource. The referral will be kept on file. The referral source and other teachers will be encouraged to keep the team informed of any new pertinent information. If the CIT has determined that there is a concern for possible substance abuse, then a parent will be contacted by the guidance counselor or a member of the CIT to set up a meeting. - When the parent phone call is made, parents will be informed that there are concerns related to some changes in the student’s behavior at school and we would like them to come in to talk about this. The caller will be ready to identify for the parent three specific behaviors of concern if the parent asks. - A confidential conference will be held with members of the C.I.T. and the parent(s). Outside referral resources will be offered as well as resources within the school (not to be considered a replacement for the outside help, rather supplemental) - The case manager will send a status form to the original referral source. - The re-entry procedures described below will be put into place if the student is hospitalized. 2. Students assigned five day in-school-school suspension with 6-week Pathways in school educational program - Students found to be under the influence of or in possession of alcohol/drugs may be assigned to a 5 day ISS and must complete the Pathways program. - At the conclusion of the Pathways program the Pathways coordinators may request further follow-up by a case manager from the Chemical Intervention Team. - A case manager will be assigned from the CIT and together with the student’s guidance counselor will meet with the student within 2 weeks of completing the Pathways program. - Further meetings will be determined by the student’s academic and behavior performance in school and outside support that the student may be receiving. If there continue to be concerns in these areas the student will be re-referred to the SAP team. 3. Students assigned to the Pathways program due to violation of the co-curricular code after school hours - At the conclusion of the Pathways program the Pathways coordinators may request further follow-up by a case manager from the Chemical Intervention Team. 4. Students returning from hospitalization or alternative therapeutic placements for substance abuse issues: - The student’s guidance counselor will arrange a meeting for the morning of re-entry, before school or during first period. - The counselor will contact the Assistant Principal to identify the assigned C.I.T. case manager - A re-entry note from the hospital or alternative setting is required before the student returns to classes. - The student, parent, C.I.T. case manager, social worker and guidance counselor will attend the re-entry meeting. In-school and out-of-school follow-up and academic progress will be discussed at the re-entry meeting. - Student and C.I.T. case manager will meet weekly for one month. - Student and C.I.T. case manager will then meet every other week for one month. - The guidance counselor will also continue to check in and monitor academic issues and progress on makeup work. - C.I.T. member will contact parent on the day of each meeting with student to communicate any concerns and update current situation. - If problems arise during or at the conclusion of the eight-week period, a meeting will be arranged with parent, student, social worker and C.I.T. case manager to help resolve the situation. - At the conclusion of the eight week follow-up, the case-manager will e-mail the student’s teachers requesting the grade status and any concerns/comments they have regarding the student. In addition the CIT case-manager will review the student’s attendance, discipline referrals and progress reports according to the SAP discussion form. A summary of this information will be presented at the next SAP team meeting to determine if any additional follow-up is needed. If the CIT case manager is unable to attend the next SAP meeting, this information will be given to the Assistant Principal prior to the meeting.
