The Truth about Marijuana

Myth

Marijuana can be used for medicinal purposes for cancer patients.

Truth
It is true that a small amount of THC, only one of the 421 different compounds found in marijuana, can relieve nausea. In fact, THC is already legally available in the prescription drug, Marinol. This form of THC is one of the 11 prescription drugs used for nausea with cancer patients. However, because THC is less effective then other medications, has strong side effects and is addictive, it is used less frequently than the other medications on the market. Marijuana contains an impure form of THC plus hundreds of different chemicals. Smoking pot decreases the body's immune system, making it much more likely to develop other illnesses. This is dangerous for cancer patients who are already fighting one life threatening disease.

Myth
Smoking marijuana would help people who have glaucoma.

Truth
As with cancer, there are several safe and effective prescription drugs available for glaucoma patients. Glaucoma is a chronic disease, therefore medication is often taken daily. Because THC is addictive and has strong side effects it is inappropriate for glaucoma patients. Smoking marijuana would expose people with glaucoma to THC addiction, loss of short term memory, poor coordination and motivation, and a host of other physical health risks.

Myth
Marijuana is a safe drug.

Truth
Pot has been linked to lung cancer, loss of short term memory, decreased immune system, reduction of sperm production and irregular menstrual cycles. These health risks may affect even infrequent or occasional users.

Myth
Smoking marijuana is not bad for your lungs as tobacco smoke.

Truth
Both pot and cigarette smoke create health risks. Pot smoke however, contains 2 to 3 times more tar, carbon monoxide and other cancer causing agents than tobacco smoke. Both pot tobacco smoke have been linked to lung cancer.

Myth
Marijuana is not addictive.

Truth
Marijuana has been proved addictive. People can become psychologically dependent on pot and have physical withdrawal symptoms when they stop using it.
