Course Overview:

Global Issues provides a study of current issues affecting the United States and the world. Global Issues is an elective social studies course strongly recommended for all sophomores and is open to all juniors and seniors for one-half credit. Through the use of the Internet, the cable program CNN Newsroom, and other forms of media, students will investigate and analyze important national and international issues as they relate to the global community. There is no specific text for Global Issues.  All reading packets, worksheets, notes and other class materials must be placed in a three ring binder along with all other class materials. This binder takes the place of a textbook and may not be used for any other class.

The class will analyze articles, read packets and complete worksheets, compile timelines, write papers, create and give powerpoint presentations, and take quizzes and tests.  Expect homework an average of three to four nights a week.  The class will culminate with a student written paper expressing the student's opinion on the appropriate role of the United States in the global community.

Curriculum Topics:

Each week we will discuss current issues, with the discussion led by students and the teacher.  At times, current issues will be transformed into larger units with more in-depth study.  Each semester the in-depth topics change according to what is happening in the world.  Topics that may be addressed include:  the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, genocide, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, globalization, the presidential election, AIDS in Africa and poverty in America vs. poverty in third world countries.
