2005 VH1 Behind the Music: Iron Rose
Behind the Music: Iron Rose tells the true story of this band of rock and roll outlaws and their journey back to Lake Zurich High School
Iron Rose emerged from the heart of the hair metal jungle on Lake Zurich’s Main Street in 2004 and single-handedly reinvented rock and roll with righteous riffs and a real and present element of danger. Songs like "Shook Me All Night Long" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" were not merely rebellious anthems; they were autobiographical snapshots of a band that lived and worked on the edge. The band's exploits became as notorious as its music as members dabbled with teaching, coaching and other forms of addiction.
Iron Roses’ 2004 stage debut struck a raw nerve - enrapturing teens and enraging parents. Thanks to arena-ready tunes like "Livin’ on a Prayer" and "Sweet Child O Mine," the performance would become one of the most successful debuts ever.
Led by vocalist Izzy Ternes, Iron Rose was a magnet for controversy – whether it was teaching, song lyrics, or bad behavior. And even as the band was quickly rising up the rock music food chain, internal struggles always threatened to tear the band apart. Despite their success, the band was about to enter a trying time for their career. Original guitarist Lizzy Stortz was fired for his losing battle with addiction in 2004 but later rehired. Dizzy Scott looked to religion and inner peace to deal with the trials and tribulations of being a rock star. Blade Kettinger, the original drummer, just kinda hung out and waited. Nobody really told him much.
Izzy and Dizzy’s creative differences led to Izzy’s unpredictable behavior. In the eyes of countless hard rock fans and himself, Izzy Ternes is the prototypical frontman. With a flamboyant, larger-than-life stage presence and a party hearty/surfer dude persona, Izzy believed the band should go on tour to support the meteoric rise to global dominance Iron Rose was feeling. Dizzy believed creative song lyrics and studio work could bring Iron Rose to a level of intellectual supremacy within the teenage world. Together, they caused what seemed to be the end of Iron Rose.
During the summer of 2005, with Lizzy fighting his scrap booking addiction and Izzy and Dizzy’s creative feuds, help came from the most unlikely source. Blade had been more of an outsider than the drummer of one of the most prolific hair metal bands. Instead of having Iron Rose disappear into the world of rock myth, Blade set up a meeting in the office of the same building where Iron Rose was first created. Many heart felt hours of bickering, crying, and complaining went into that memorable day. But when the four members walked out of those magical doors into the rock world, the reunion tour was set. After months of self-indulgent musical pursuits and addiction that often left their audiences puzzled, the group has triumphantly returned to their raw, rock & roll roots.
One year after it made it’s historic stage debut, Iron Rose has come back to the PAC to rock Lake Zurich High School again.
