Academic Skills Syllabus

Overview:

The purpose of the Academic Skills class is to serve students as a resource period. Students will work on the following in Academic Skills:

o Study Skills

o Academic work

o IEP goals and objectives

o Independent reading and journaling

Classroom Expectations:

• Be prepared – bring all necessary materials to class (daily)

• Be punctual – be in the classroom when the bell rings (daily)

• Fill out and maintain an assignment notebook (daily)

• Participate in Study Skills lessons (45 minutes per week)

• Work on academic assignments when given time (If a student has no academic work then he/she is expected to work on one of the following: IEP goals and objectives, independent reading or journaling.)

• Review IEP goals and objectives (minimum once a month)

• Computers will be used for academic work only

Grading:

Grades will be based on the following criteria:

o Participation in Study Skills lessons and completion of related work/tests

o Filling out assignment notebooks daily

o Addressing IEP goals and objectives

o Completing academic work and being on task

o Behavior

o Attendance and punctuality

***Note: The teacher has the authorization to look at a student’s overall performance in the class when determining the quarter and semester grades. If a student does not merit the grade calculated through the above criteria, the grade may be changed or credit may be denied at the teacher’s discretion.
