HOMEWORK TIPS

We like to view assignments as home learning rather than homework. It is the most consistent day-to-day contact between teachers and parents. It is meant to provide additional learning opportunities to practice. Home learning teaches students responsibility. Through home learning, students learn skills they must develop if they are to grow to be independent, motivated and successful adults. Some of these important life skills are: following directions, beginning and completing a task, as well as time management. By encouraging your child to work on his or her own, you are helping to develop these important life skills.

We suggest that you follow these guidelines:

• Check to see that your child is doing home learning at a prearranged time.
• Provide an appropriate, quiet study area.
• Suggest that your child call a classmate if help is needed.
• Call or email your child's teacher for further clarification of assignments when needed.
• Give your child help only if a real effort has been made to do the work.
• Praise your child when he or she does home learning independently. Let your child know how proud you are that they are maturing and becoming responsible.
