Students need to learn how to take responsibility for their own behaviors. It takes self-responsible behaviors to become a successful person in today's world. Successful adults learn to take responsibility for their own lives-physically, emotionally and intellectually. Children do not enter this world as independent, self-responsible beings. With the help of supportive adults, we at North hope to assist students in their quest for self-responsibility. This sense of personal power will allow the students to believe that they can do any task that they set out to do, and that they are in charge of their own behavior. That their attitude can and does play a large part in self-responsibility and personal power.
Research has shown us that when students are in control of their lives they are less susceptible to social pressures from other (Friedman & Lackey, 1991). The more exposure students have to setting realistic goals and to achieving what they set out to do, the more they will develop a positive sense of their own personal power. As teachers we hope to help model this responsibility concept, help student to take an increasing role in their own responsibilities, and also their own learning processes. By allowing the student choices, we hope to promote their ability to make good decisions, and help them see that the choices they make are in their hands.
The teachers' role is to help students evaluate their choices and the consequences that may occur due to their choices. We as adults need to help students see that for any and all of the choices they make, there will be positive or negative consequences. Mistakes are allowed, as we bring these new concepts to the students. At times, qualifiers will be needed to insure the safety of all involved, as this is a learning process and students, parents, and teachers need to work together as a team.
