Welcome to Mr. P's Classes

Hello everyone!

Mid-terms have come and gone, and this year is flying by faster than I can even imagine.  I don't know about you, but I'm having a great time!

In Language Arts for 6th grade, we've begun our brain color writing assignment.  We will have the opportunity this week to examine art and music to see how it matches our personality.  In 7th grade, we're addressing problems at North to make it a more pleasant social experience for everyone.

In Literature, for 6th grade, we're finishing up our short stories, and soon will be on to Tuck Everlasting.  In 7th grade, we've got just a couple more days with Aesop, and then we're on to Where the Red Fern Grows.

Literature                         Language Arts

Throughout the year, students will explore their own lives and the world around them through various text sources, both fiction and non -fiction.  The stories and passages that we will read will allow the students to contemplate their participation not only in life here at Middle School North, but as a contributor to a global society, as well.

 

While they are reading in literature, language arts will be full of writing opportunities.  The students will learn to hone their writing skills while focusing on grammar and style.  In addition, a stress will be put on vocabulary and grammar skills.  Students should feel confident that they can express themselves verbally in any given situation.

 

 

Tentative Curricular Schedule: 6th Grade

1st quarter: Students will begin with a study of biographies, then leading into a brief unit on short stories, culminating with a study of Natalie Babbitt's Tuck Everlasting.

1st quarter: Students will analyze their personalities, sharing ideas about themselves to their classmates, eventually creating a story with themselves as the main character.

2nd quarter: Students will independently read a mystery and historical fiction novel, then moving on to The Lightning Thief.

2nd quarter: Students will recall memories from three different "eras" of their lives and fashion them into their narrative memoirs.

3rd quarter: Students will independently read realistic fiction, as well as study, in depth, Greek mythology.

3rd quarter: Students will learn the ins and outs of arguing as we venture into persuasive writing.

4th quarter: Students will independently read a fantasy/science fiction book, as well as Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time and Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth.

4th quarter: Students will research pertinent, cross-curricular topics in order to produce a multi-class piece of expository writing in newspaper or magazine form.

 

Tentative Curricular Schedule: 7th Grade

1st quarter: Students will independently read a novel from the Rebecca Caudill book list and then read Where the Red Fern Grows

1st quarter: Students will review the writing process, work on grammar, practice vocabulary, and participate in the newspaper unit

2nd quarter: The Rebecca Caudill nominee, Wolf Brother, will be read as a class, and then the students will read Devil's Arithmetic

2nd quarter: Students will review the writing process, work on grammar, practice vocabulary, and work on their young author stories

3rd quarter: Students will independently read a novel from the Rebecca Caudill book list and then read The Cay

3rd quarter: Students will review the writing process, work on grammar, practice vocabulary, and work on a series of cold prompt essays

4th quarter: The Rebecca Caudill nominee, Alabama Moon, will be read as a class, and then the students will readThe Outsiders

4th quarter: Students will review the writing process, work on grammar, practice vocabulary, and participate in the poetry unit
