A student's grade is based on a point system.  For example, a homework assignment could be worth 1 point or 30 points depending upon the number of questions or the value of the assignment.  A test, project, presentation are generally worth more points than Homework, Classwork, Quizzes, and Class Participation, and Class Use.   Almost everything a student turns in is given a point value.  The following are the categories used for grading.

bulletTests
bulletProjects
bulletPresentations: It is essential that a student can not only learn new information, but present it to a group in a way that is creative and easily understood.
bulletHomework:
bulletQuiz: These are sometimes unannounced. It gives me a good idea what a student has actually retained.  If many students do poorly, then I can reflect on how I taught the lesson and change it to improve student learning.  If this is the case, I will re-teach the lesson a different way and give students an opportunity to take another quiz.
bulletClasswork: This includes work that is expected to be done in class.  Can include things like bookwork, worksheets etc.
bulletClass Participation: A lot of time in class is spent working in groups.  Almost always a student has a job while in group.  How well he/she performs the job determines the number of points earned.  Points are also earned for participation in whole class discussions and activities.
bulletClass Use: I usually give students time in class to do work; it is important that they use the time wisely.
