Debate:  World Leaders during World War II

 

Objective:

          Students will research and debate the influences of world leaders.  Each group will attempt to prove their leader is the most effective leader of the time period.

 

Task:

Day One

  1. Students are assigned to groups of five.
  2. Each group brainstorms ten qualities of effective leaders.
  3. Each group chooses the top three qualities and writes them on the whiteboard.  Class briefly discusses what makes an effective leader.
  4. The group is assigned one leader to research and prepare to represent in a class debate.
  5. Group roles are chosen.
  6. Research begins.

Day Two

  1. Research and record information on your fact board.
  2. Be sure to thoroughly research all relevant information so you can accurately portray your leader.
  3. Begin a pre-write for the Persuasive speech.  (Homework- Finish pre-write?)

Day Three

  1. Prepare your arguments and counter-arguments.
  2. Decide on the strongest leadership characteristics displayed by your leader.
  3.  Research your opposition so you know their weaknesses.
  4. Brainstorm the challenges that will be presented to show your leader is not the best.  Develop rebuttals for those challenges.
  5. Finish writing the Persuasive speech- why is your leader the most effective.

 

Day Four

  1. Debate Day.  There is no preparation time available on this day.
  2. Each representative will have 4 minutes to prove to the audience why their leader is the best leader of this time period.
  3. When all groups have given their argument, each representative has two minutes to give a rebuttal.
  4. The class will vote for the best leader, based on material presented during the debate.  Students may not vote for their own leader.
