Berlin Cathedral. Spring 2005
In
7th Grade German we pick up where we left off in the 6th grade. We will
spend time reviewing of what we learned in 6th grade and refresh our
minds after our wonderful summer vacations!
After we review, students receive a copy of our
textbook, Komm Mit!.
During the year we will learn greetings, numbers, about school and
classes, the weather, and likes and dislikes. By the end of German 1,
students should be able to hold a simple conversation and feel comfortable
speaking and writing in simple sentences and short paragraphs.
We do a lot of work with vocabulary and later in
the year we begin to work with some of the German grammar. There are daily
vocabulary quizzes, therefore it is necessary for the students to study
each night for 10-30 minutes. The vocabulary is important to forming
sentences and understanding the chapter. Often times the vocabulary words
are similar to words in English. We also work together as a class to help
each other with fun ways to remember the words.
Helpful hints for studying for vocabulary quizzes:
* Make flashcards with the words~ put the English on one side and German
on the other. This way you can study both ways and hold on to the
flashcards for the BIG test on Friday!
* Use the vocabulary list and fold it so you can only see one language and
quiz yourself.
* Write out the vocabulary words many times over or until you've got the
spelling down!
* Have mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle (okay I
think you get the idea) quiz you on the words. They should say
the word in English and you can spell the German word.
As in 6th grade, we play review games, work in
partners, do projects, listen to German music, and watch movies in the German language.
Culture is learned daily through pictures, stories, grammar/vocabulary,
and cultural tidbits in the textbook.
I feel that it is also important that students
begin to speak in German as well. I encourage students to at least try to
speak in German. Mistakes are a GOOD thing when trying to speak. If a
student (or sometimes the teacher) makes a mistake, it is usually a
mistake that we can all learn from.
