How can you help your German student?

King Ludwig's Schloss Linderhof.  Bavaria, Germany. Summer 2006

Willkommen bei Deutsch 2! In Deutsch 2, we spend the first few weeks reviewing what we learned in Deutsch 1 and then continue with new material. We will continue to use the textbook we used last year, Komm Mit!

We learn more about the German language and grammar. As with Deutsch 1, vocabulary is a very important part of learning the language. We have vocabulary quizzes each Friday on about 20-25 words. Often times the vocabulary words are similar to words in English. We also work together as a class to help each other with fun ways to remember the words. During the week, students will use the vocabulary words while earning participation points.

Students will be graded on vocabulary quizzes, assignments, projects, homework, participation and chapter tests. Students will receive a vocabulary list and homework packet for each chapter. Often they will be the same color paper so that they can not be lost.

In 8th grade, we will emphasize speaking more in German. We will do what I call Fragen und Antworten (questions and answers) with our vocabulary words. Students will form questions using a vocabulary word and ask their questions of their peers. The peers will have the opportunity to answer the question. Everyone who speaks during this portion of the class will receive participation points. Participation points will be a large portion of the grade this year, as we have more knowledge of the language!

8th grade students also have the opportunity to travel to Germany in the summer.  Throughout this website are pictures from previous trips. The trip is an excellent chance for students to use the German they have learned, see wonderful historical sites, visit museums, meet German people, experience the German culture, and eat the delicious German food! This year our German trip is taking place during the summer of 2010!  For more information stay tuned to the German Trip page or ask your children!
