Middle School North Campus
Home Economics
Attention all
crafters and home sewers: If you have fabrics or other sewing materials that you
are no longer using, we would love to have them for the Home Economics
department!
Sixth grade home economics is divided into two units. In
sewing students will focus on learning to use the sewing machine and construct a
mini backpack as their project. In foods class, students will learn the tools of the
kitchen, kitchen and food safety. Foods labs feature fun
treats such as French bread pizza and saucepan fudge brownies.
At the beginning of seventh grade home economics students will
review using the sewing machine. They will then construct their own boxer
shorts or pants. In foods, students will review kitchen safety and learn new
cooking techniques by preparing quickbreads such as biscuits and
muffins.
Eighth grade home economics is a twelve week elective class. In foods,
students will explore cultural diversity by studying various cultures and ethnic
groups and their cuisines. They will prepare dishes representative of these
cultures in foods lab. In sewing, students will continue their work with the
sewing machine, and also learn various types of hand stitchery, including hand
quilting, embroidery and appliqué. Each student will construct a nine patch
pillow.
