Language Arts Curriculum Overview

Textbook- Glencoe's Writer's Choice
Supplemental Text- Zaner-Bloser’s: Spelling Connections

Overview: Language arts provide students with the basic skills of grammar, writing, spelling, visual representation, speaking, and listening. A “hands on approach” is taken in the units to make the study more interesting and meaningful to students. Students are expected to participate in class activities and discussions. Completion of classroom assignments and homework is mandatory to pass this course.

 Assignments:

  • Grammar skill assignments will often be given as homework rather than class work.
  • Daily journal writing is required.
  • Spelling list are provided to students on the first day of the week. Spelling tests are given on the last day of the week. ALL SPELLING ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED IN CURSIVE HANDWRITING.
  • We will explore and write narrative, expository, and persuasive essays as well as poetry and creative writing. Expect to create at least one piece of writing per week.
  • Writing folders will be kept in the classroom. All writing will be stored there until the end of the school year.
  • Speeches and visual presentations will be required a minimum of once each quarter.
