 Overview:

In this class, students will read and experience literature in a variety of genres. We are using a new textbook series and implementing a newly aligned curriculum.  Students will be expected to read many novels, short stories, poetic works, and various expository texts, as well as participating in a  year long study of language structures and word analysis. In addition, approximately 7-10 book reports will be assigned throughout the school year. Students are expected to participate in class activities and discussions. Completion of classroom assignments and homework is mandatory to pass this course.

Classroom Novels:
(Students may be asked to read any combination of the novels listed. Other novels may be included as deemed necessary by the teacher.)

 Assignments:

  • Students are expected to read the assigned literature material and complete related classroom activities and assignments.
  • Response journals, comprehension worksheets, hands on projects, literature circle discussions and vocabulary studies are the most typical assignments.
  • Reading logs are required each week. Students must complete two hours of reading each week (120 min.), keep a record of what is read, write a brief summary, and have a parent signature for each entry.
  • Note taking is essential. Students must maintain a notebook of literary terms.
