Mathematics Guidelines
Welcome to 8th grade. I look forward to working with you this year J
Daily Supplies
Please come to class prepared. You need to bring your binder that has a section divider for math class, pencils and red pen.
Class Rules
1. Be prepared, seated, and ready to work when the bell rings.
2. Treat each other, teacher, and class materials with respect.
3. Raise your hand before talking.
4. Class is over when you are dismissed by the teacher.
GUT’s (Gum, Unprepared, Tardy)
A warning will be given for chewing gum, being unprepared for class (an example of unprepared is you forgot your binder in your locker), or being tardy. Upon the third warning, a behavior detention is assigned.
Extra Help
· In class! The best time to ask questions or get clarification on something is during our math class. I will try to give time to start homework at the end of the period in order to allow time for this. Also ask questions during class, others might have the same question but will not ask.
· Homeroom. If you are in a regular homeroom, you can come see me for help during the homeroom period. Sometimes you might just need to drop in and ask a quick question.
· After school. I will schedule two days after school to be available for help. I will have a sign in the room letting you know the days.
Grading System
A point system is used to compute your mathematics grade. Your final grade will be an average of your homework, note packet grade, quizzes and tests.
Daily homework assignments are worth five points. To earn full points the assignment must show the required work, be fully completed and on time. Incompletes or late assignments turned in one day late will receive three out of five points. Assignments two or more days late will receive one point.
Computer generated grade reports are updated and posted on a weekly basis. Students are given a personal code to check their grades. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of their current grade and to check for accuracy. A blank spot will alert a student
of any missing or absent work. The blank spot will be computed as a zero until the work is completed and turned in.
Homework
In order for math work to be accepted it must:
· Have the proper heading (name, date, period)
· Have all required work shown on the assignment
(refer to the notes as to what work is required)
Missing problems or lack of required work will result in an incomplete assignment.
A pink sheet will then need to be filled out.
Steps to follow when grading homework
1. Use only red pen. No neon gel colors or highlighters please.
2. Mark all problems either correct or incorrect.
3. Make the correction for each problem that is incorrect. Work the problem again and show the correct answer. Some time in class will be given to do this.
Do not have the assignment fully completed?
1. Fill out a pink sheet (found in the back of the room).
2. When the class hands up the assignment, you will pass up the pink sheet.
3. One day will be given for you to complete the assignment with only partial credit given (three out of five points)
4. Please write “LATE” at the top of the paper and the date you are turning in the assignment. Pass up the completed late assignment when the next assignment is being collected.
Note Packets
For each chapter you will be given a note packet. Some of the items and directions will already be typed for you. I feel it is important to listen while we are going over new information. Some of the notes will be fill in the blank and section directions will be given as well. I will collect note packets before each chapter test and you will save them throughout the year.
Absent?
1. Grade the homework that was due the day you were absent. This should be completed since you were here when it was assigned. Give the graded assignment to Mrs. Martin.
2. Check the homework board. You have two days for each day you were absent to make up work. If there was a worksheet assigned, it will be in the red file according to your class period. Otherwise, book assignments, quizzes, and tests are written on the calendar.
3. Please borrow another student’s note packet and copy the notes from the day you were missed. If you have any questions, please see me for clarification.
4. Complete the assignment using the notes you copied and turn the assignment in when other work is being collected. Besides the regular heading, please write “ABSENT” at the top of the paper.
