In Honors
Geometry this quarter, we will be studying chapters 7, 8 and 9
in Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge. We will be examining
polygons, the Pythagorean Theorem and basic trigonometry. In
addition to our regular geometry coursework, we will be working
hard to prepare for the ISAT exams in March. Throughout second
semester we will be focusing on new study skills with each
chapter to continue to prepare our students for the exciting new
world of high school!
Science
The World of Physics is the area
of study during the first semester of HAL science. Students
will be learning how physics plays an important role
in our lives through the study of force, motion, and energy.
Students will be engaged in many learning opportunities to
help them understand the many physics concepts they will
encounter this semester. Some of the real-life science
activities include: egg drops, crash dummies, sports, egg
expressway, hot wheels races, simple machines, Rube
Goldberg, roller coaster creations and many more. Students
will get up close and personal with Mr. Albert Einstein and
Sir Isaac Newton! They will learn about their discoveries;
understand the historical perspective of what they
accomplished; discover the impact they had on the scientific
community; and begin to see each as a real person. Through
this study, students can begin to understand the scientists'
motivation for success, the talents and skills they used to
achieve their goals, as well as, the mistakes they made in
the process. Once students have a better understanding of
Einstein and Newton, they will have a better understanding
of what the two scientists' accomplishments and impact on
the World of Physics and everyday life.
This year students will be
creating semester portfolios. The purpose of the portfolio
is to provide students with the opportunity to display their
development of content knowledge, process skills, and
attitudes in science. It will allow students to show off
their strengths and to become an active participant in the
assessment process.

History/Literature/Language Arts |
History- During 3rd
quarter, we take a close look at the conflicts which helped
to define our country today. At the dawn of the 20th Century
America flexed its muscles in the Spanish American War, played
mediator and eventual savior to our European allies during the
Great War, and mightily struggled to overcome the demise of a
bloated economic lifestyle which imploded into the Great
Depression.
Literature/Language Arts-
Third quarter's literature selections revolve around understanding
conflict, genocide, and the value of human life. We will finish
our Utopian unit with the novel Animal Farm. As we move
into the study of World War 1, the students will read All
Quiet on the Western Front , poetry by the Lost Poets of
WW1, and Forgotten Fire, a novel about the little known
Armenian genocide.
The focus for
third quarter language arts is developing quality
written work. Students will work on persuasive writing and have
a culminating research paper on genetic engineering. With this
in mind, grammar units will focus on developing complex, varied
sentences which are correctly punctuated. Similarly, there will
be a greater expectation for students to integrate their
vocabulary lists into their writing. Finally, ISAT expectations
will coincide with all written work and literary work.
