TAHITI IS LOCATED IN THE French Polynesia ISLANDS OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL, mountainous, TROPICAL ISLAND THAT'S KNOWN FOR ITS CLEAR WATER AND TROPICAL TREES. The 2002 population on this 404 sq. mile island was about 169,674. Its capital is Papeete. The island is 31% forested as of 1998.
It's highest point is atop of Mount Orohena. The official language spoken is French, since it was discovered by the French and is in the French Polynesian islands. Some people even speak Tahitian. Pretty much every person can speak at least a little english, though. It's been owned by France since 1957.
The official currency of tahiti is the cfp Franc (Comptoire Francaise du Pacifique-cfpf), which equals about 0.013 U.S. dollars. You still have to bring quite a bit of money, though, since prices are usually in the hundreds for a simple meal.
