Robert Scott and his men were one of the groups that traveled to the South Pole, partially for exploring and partially for scientific purposes. Unfortunately, they all died on the return journey.

1927 - Leon Trotsky is expelled from the Soviet Union by Stalin, leaving Stalin with full control.
Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin were political opponents of the communist party. After the death of Lenin, the previous leader, the two fought for leadership. Stalin used force to expel Trotsky and take over the Soviet Union. Stalin eventually sent a man to kill Trotsky with an ice pick.

1933 - Hugh Gray takes the first known photos of the Loch Ness Monster
Hugh Gray was walking back from church when he saw a large splashing water around on the surface. He took a few photos but they were dismissed by others as too blurry. Others believe it was his dog swimming in the water.

1970 - The Oregon Highway division attempts to remove a dead, beached sperm whale with dynamite.

The explosion turned out to be for the worst, and some of the falling pieces of whale blubber ended up crushing a nearby car. Only part of the whale was blown up, and the rest had to be cleaned up by the highway division workers.

1980 - NASA space probe Voyager 1 takes the first images of Saturn's rings.
It was also at this time that the spacecraft came closer to Saturn than any other before it. Voyager 1 is still in space.

1981 - Double Eagle V is the first balloon to cross the Pacific Ocean

It traveled 5,768 miles from Nagashima, Japan to Mendocino National Forest. It was piloted by Ben Abruzzo, Larry Newman, Ron Clark, and Rocky Aoki. It traveled for eighty four hours and thirty one minutes.

1990 - Tim Berners-Lee publishes a formal proposal for the World Wide Web
Berners-Lee created the world wide web to join hypertext to the internet. He also designed the first web browser and started the world wide web consortium.

1991 - Indonesian forces open fire on student protestors in Dili, East Timor.
The students were protesting Indonesian rule. The entire massacre was caught on video tape and spread around. This was extremly embarrasing to the Indonesian government.

1993 - The first Ultimate Fighting Championship is held in Denver, Colorado.
This tournament was set up to find the world's best fighting style. "Fighters" from all different fighting methods would come to compete against one another. Originally there were few restrictions and fights ended brutally and violently.

1815 - Elizabeth Cady Stanton - Women's Rights Activist
Elizabeth Cady Stanton started the women's rights movement along with Lucrietta Mott after holding a convention for the cause in Seneca Falls, New York. She went on to create the National Women's Suffrage Association with Susan B. Anthony and was one of the main figureheads of women's rights.

1908 - Harry Blackmun - Supreme Court Justice
Blackmun is best known for writing the majority opinion for Roe vs. Wade, which had to do whether or not abortion should be legal. He worked to overturn laws restricting abortion. He was born in Illinois.

1908 - Amon Göth - Commander of a Nazi Concentration Camp
Amon was born in Vienna and joined the Austrian Nazi Section at age 22. He went on to command a forced labor camp at Plazow. Eventually he was tried and executed for charges of killing tens of thousands of people. It took three tries before he was successfully hung.
1934 - Charles Manson - Cult Leader and Current Inmate

Charles Manson created the "Manson Family", a cult-commune, where he ordered his followers to commit murders. He is a symbol for homicidal psychoses, and is currently serving a life sentence.
