Important Events on November 19!!

November 19 is a very important day to me because it's my birthday! However, many other important and exciting events occurred on that day as well. Some of these are:
1863 Lincoln delivered "Four score and seven years" in Gettysburg
This is one of the country's most famous speeches given at the dedication of the military cemetery in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. His speech used only 272 words and lasted only two minutes, many people had not even settled down. His speech began with the Founding Fathers visions of the nation.

1985 Reagan and Gorbachev held their first summit meeting in 8 years
At this meeting, there were no huge agreements made, however, the two men seemed to develop a close relationship. The few agreements that were made involved cultural and scientific exchanges as well as environmental issues. Both leaders were happy with the way the meeting turned out.
1916 Goldwyn Company Formed
Samuel Goldfish and Edgar Selwyn established the Goldwyn company. The name Goldwyn was a mix of both of their names. It became one of the world's most flourishing independent filmakers. The company had well known actors and writers, however, the company struggled. Later Goldwyn merged with Metro Pictures and Louis B. Mayer productions to form MGM.
1944 FDR Starts 6th War Loan Drive
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was trying to find ways to fund World War II. This loan drive produced a flood of war bonds in the market in order to raise 14 million dollars quickly.
1942 Soviet Red Army Turns at Stalingrad
The Soviet Army launched a counteroffensive against the German army north of Stalingrad. As the Germans were being pushed back into Stalingrad (the city they were trying to take) the Soviet Army attacked from the south of the city of Stalingrad. This was a very daring move, but it worked. The leader of these German troops asked to be allowed to retreat, Hitler would not allow it.
1954 The First Automatic Toll Machine Placed at Union Toll Plaza
The first automatic toll was placed at the union Toll Plaza on New Jersey's Garden State Parkway. If motorists wanted to pass through the toll area, they had to drop 25 cents into a wire mesh hopper and a green light permitting them to pass through would flash.
