October's birthstone is the opal. The opal originated in Australia. It is an opaque, white-based stone with what is known as different-colored "fire." Opals are formed at low temperatures and can occur in fissures and cavities of any rock type. The opal has a rich iridescence. Opals are mostly mined in South Australia, but have also been mined in Honduras, Mexico, and Nevada.
The zodiac sign for this day is the libra (the scales: Sept. 24-Oct. 23). The libra is the only inanimate sign. All the others represent humans or animals. The libra's color of choice is blue, and the starstone is the sapphire. The libra's ruling planet is Venus.
The flower of the month is the calendula. The Latin meaning of this plant is "throughout the months." The calendula is a member of the marigold family. It has also been valued for it's medicinal and culinary uses. An ancient beverage was made from calendula blossoms and wine. The petals were used in ointments that cured skin irritations, jaundice, sore eyes and toothaches. The Romans used it mixed with vinegar to season meat and salad dishes.
