October is the tenth month of the year. It is called
October because 'oct' means 'eight', and it used to be the eighth month of
the primitive Roman year, which began in March.
Astrological Sign
October's astrological sign is Libra, the scales.
Birth Stone
October is associated with two different birth stones --
the opal,
and the tourmaline.
Both come in a wide array of colors, tourmaline in the widest. In fact,
tourmaline presents the most varied colors of any known gemstone. Perhaps
the varied colors reflects something of a 'theme' for October.
Opals
are actually partly constructed of water. They were formed from silica and
water, after millions of years. Therefore, they cannot be stored in a very
dry place. The name, 'Opal' probably came from the
Sanskrit word "upala", meaning ”valuable stone“. This was
probably the root for the Greek word “opallios”, which means
"color change".
Tourmalines
are very unique. Almost every tourmaline is an original, and it displays
the most vast array of colors out of any of the gemstones. It also
gives off an electric charge, called "pyro-electricity".
