The Meaning of October is a fairly easy term to grasp. Back when Numa Pompilius - the second king of Rome - made the calendar the way it is today (with twelve months) October turned into the tenth month. This was in 700 BC. Before that day when Numa came up with the new calendar - no one is quite sure who came up with the other one -, October was the eighth month. This is how it got its name, using the prefix of octo - meaning eighth - and the suffix, ber - primarily used in months.
The birthstone of October is the Opal stone. It comes in a variety of colors, due to the way the light passes through the silica of the stone. The silica is found all throughout the stone and it is like the acrylic paint, as to where it changes colors in the different places you look at it. Most of the opal production (95%) comes from Australia. There are 14 types of opals; Black Opal, Black Crystal Opal, Boulder Opal, Crystal Opal, Fiery Opal, Gem/Precious Opal, Jelly Crystal Opal, Matrix Boulder Opal, Mosaic Opal, Picture Opal, Potch (Common) Opal, Rainbow Opal, Semi-Black Opal, and White Opal.
The Lend Lease Bill was a bill that President Roosevelt proposed to send weapons and supplies to Western Europe to help in the war against the Germans and the Italians. This was a worldwide event because it affected all of the countries in WWII and it pulled the US into the war.

Since the 1980's, the US has been going further into debt with a republican in office and has been getting out of debt with a democrat. This is a domestic issue, because this is the US debt and it doesnt affect that many other countries besides the US.

The Soviet Union had held Hungary for a long time, but the Democratic countries finally overtook the Soviets and made Hungary once again independent. This event was known worldwide, because it was significant to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
The currency of Hong Kong (the Hong Kong Dollar) was dropping in value, so the government raised interest rates in Hong Kong, causing the stocks to slip. Since Hong Kong and all of China is an important trading country, other countries' stocks also fell due to the drop in Hong Kong. This is a worldwide event, because Hong Kong is a huge importing, exporting country in the world. The whole world was effected by the drop of the stocks, because China raised its tariffs.

This is only a domestic event, only affecting the US, because this was only spent in the US and it involved defecit spending.

This was held on December 6, 2001. This is also a domestic event, because the people doing this were only opposing ceratin events in the US and it never came outside of the US.
Scientists at Stanford University have created a vaccine that they say will stop the spread of smallpox - even if it is only temporary. After the fall of anthrax, the biowarfare has still been going on. They are now using smallpox and we are unaware of which country is spreading the disease. This event affected people worldwide because the spread of smallpox could have easily been spread throughout the world if it came to the US.
In Ashland, VA, police found a letter in a restaurant that the sniper had been to. They say that the letter was written by the sniper. They think he could be in the area, because on October 9, he had attacked a young boy near this region. This issue was only a domestice issue because only the US was affected and attacked by the sniper, and he was found before he could escape the US.
Adlai Stevenson was born in 1835 in Christian County, Kentucky. He moved to Bloomington, Illinois in 1852. He was elected into the forty-fourth Congress in 1875, tried for forty-fifth Congress and failed, and elected into the forty-sixth Congress in 1879. He was elected Vice-President - with Grover Cleveland as president - in 1892 and had an unsuccessful attempt at being VP again in 1900. Stevenson died in Chicago, Illinois in 1914 after being retired for 6 years.
Johnny Carson - born as John William Carson - was born in Corning, Iowa, in 1925. His parents were Homer Carson, a power company manager and Ruth Carson, a housewife. Carson got into game shows by seeing his brother, Dick - director of Wheel of Fortune - do a lot of game shows and try to put together things for the show. Carson used to host the Tonight Show and that was his most popular show, continuously topping the rankings. He has received many awards, including being inducted into the television Hall of Fame in 1987.
Pele was born, as Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, in Tres Coracos, Brazil, in 1940. He learned how to play soccer from his father - Dondinho Nascimento (a soccer player until he fractured his leg). At the age of eleven, he was discovered by a great Brazilian soccer player, named Waldemar de Brtio. He brought Pele to the minor leagues to start him out and declared, "This boy will be the greatest soccer player in the world." In Pele's first game - in which he was only sixteen - he scored a goal immediately. In 1967, in the World Cup, he was injured by Bulgarian and Portuguese defensemen. In 1970, he was back in the World Cup and he led Brazil with their 100th goal in the final game - a game they won 4-1, against Italy. In his career, he has scored 1280 goals in 1360 games, second only yo another Brazilian great, Arthur Friedenreich. In 1977 he ended his career with these statistics and becoming the second best soccer player to ever live.
Michael Crichton was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1942 and graduated from Harvard in 1965. He went to Harvard Medical School and graduated there in 1969. He wrote a best-selling book before he even graduated that college. This book was entitled The Andromeda Strain. Aside from the great books he has created, he is also a great television and movie director - and is the creator of ER. He has won so many awards that it is getting hard to count. Even today at 61 years of age, he is still writing books and will be until the day he dies.
Dwight Yoakam was born in Nashville, - but not the one you think of when you here the name - Ohio. His first CD was named Guitars, Cadillacs, etc., etc. The second CD he created was named Hillbilly Deluxe and it turned him into a star. He wrote eight more CD's after those two, his latest was made in 1998. He then went on to make a movie and he had a soundtrack for that called, South of Heaven, West of Hell. Yoakam has been one of the most popular stars for 15 years, and is still very popular today.
Martin Luther King III, who is one of four children of King Jr., does a Civil Rights Movement, like his father. King III is now the president of a big Christian organization - named the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). King III is the eldest son of King Jr. and is also the most successful in his life. There isn't that much to say about him, but he is a great Civil Rights activist and a great Christian activist.
Al Yankovic - later known as "Weird Al" - was born in Lynwood, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles. Al started off playing the accordian, because his parents loved a polka star, named Frankie Yankovic (no relation to the family). When he grew up, he watched a lot of TV and listened to the radio a lot. The Dr. Demento Show was, by far, his favorite radio program. Once Al started off, he was broadcast and advertised on the show. Al isn't all a crazy guy, who does nothing in his life but make crazy music, he graduated as valedictorian at Lynwood High School. He then went on to college at the California Technical Institute. He started off making weird songs in Calpoly and continues to do so today. He even takes songs that were made and makes them different to make people laugh.
Doug Flutie is arguably the best football player who ever lived. His first chance to show his skills was at Boston College, where he took them to the top for the first time in years. He was first acquired by the New Jersey Generals (a USFL team) in 1985, making a record, at the time, $1 million a year. Flutie came to the NFL in 1992 with the San Diego Chargers and recently moved to the Buffalo Bills. He has won many awards including the Heisman Trophy in College and had been the MVP in the NFL. He is still playing today after a comeback in 1998, and still wants to play for a while to come.
Larry Dixon is a top-fuel race car driver in drag racing. He started off in 1988 under Don Prudhomme.He was in the pits for Prudhommefor seven years. In 1995, Dixon finally got his chance to race, though he had little experience in the car, his pit crew experience led him to know how to race. The peak of Dixon's career was in 2002, where he won the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel Title. This is one of the most coveted awards in all of top fuel racing. He plans to race for years to come and hopes to once again win the Top Fuel Title.
Ryan Rodney Reynolds, was born on October 23, 1973 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He now lives in Los Angeles, California. He is now a very accomplished actor, though he failed his High School drama class. He started off by starring a Canadian show entitled The Odyssey. He then came to America to act more. He appeared on X-Files and the David Larroquette Show. Only at the age of 30, he has a lot of acting left in him, and wants to act until he is past 40 years of age.
