Sectionals
To get to sectionals you must get 4th or higher at regional's. At sectionals there are usually three mats, and 8 guys. How most tournaments work is if you lose your match, the person you lost to must win his next match. If he doesn't win his match, you are out. If he does win his next match you are back in, but in the consolation bracket. Then if you lose that match you are out. If you get 1st at sectionals you get an automatic buy the first round at state. 2nd and 3rd at sectionals placers will have to wrestle earlier in the day at state. If you get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd you get a medal on the podium. 4th place wrestler gets a ribbon on the podium. Any other wrestlers in the tournament get nothing. The tournaments are tiring and tough, but the payoff is great. Becoming a state qualifier.
State
The state tournament is held at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center. You can see pictures at the IESA Photo Album. State is a two day tournament. There are two spots to sit, there is a spot for wrestlers (who get a pass when they weigh in to prove they're a wrestler. Then the rest is for the fans. Hotels fill up fast, so most people make reservations very early in the season. There are 8 mats at state, all are used. As wrestlers are eliminated more mats are taken away. Eventually you are left with the top 2 wrestlers. There is a ceremony for the wrestlers and then they begin. As matches are finished wrestlers are called to the podium. There is always great competition at state, it is fantastic to watch these people wrestle.
