Homework

Homework is typically given on a daily basis. I try my best to allow some time at the end of each class for students to start their homework, but this is not always the case.

I will collect each homework assignment after we have had time to go over it in class. I will indicate in my grade book if the assignment was completed, how many problems the student had correct and if corrections were made. However, points will not be calculated into the final grade for each quarter.  The purpose of homework is for students to practice new concepts so that they may become proficient in the concepts taught. I do not want to punish students that have paid attention, taken notes, tried the work, but had difficulty while practicing and therefore have many incorrect answers. I like to look at homework in terms of a sports team. A coach will not choose the starting line-up for the first game of the season after just one practice. He or she will give each member of the team ample time to practice their skills before a decision, or in this case grade, is made.

Grades

As stated above, homework will not be calculated into the final grade for a student. This means that a student’s total grade is based upon scores of tests and projects. The math departments at both the middle school and high school level believe that students scoring below an 80% do not demonstrate proficiency in the given area. As a result any student that receives a score less than 80% will be required to retake or redo a test or project or specific parts of a test or project. However, the student must meet with me to review any concepts where proficiency was not demonstrated before the student can retake a test or turn in a project redo.

Late Work

If a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to determine what work was missed and adhere to the late work policy as stated in the student agenda. I will update my website each day that the students have class with homework assigned that day and upcoming due dates or tests. Students should first check the website for the assignment. If a student has additional questions they should email me as soon as possible. Although I only work part-time I do check my email from home and respond as quickly as possible.
