|
Parrots are widely adored and admired as pets all around the world for their bright colors, shining personalities and ability to talk, and ability most birds do not possess. I have been around all sorts of birds, but five bird species particularly caught my eye. From the charm of Lovebirds, to the sassy attitude of the Conures, parrots come in all sorts of varieties. Parrots are classified by a few things that make them different from other birds. There are about 350 recorded species of parrot, but more are being discovered. Parrots are separated into two groups. Psittacidae, which are 'true parrots' and Cacatuidae which are the cockatoos. Most of the species are found in the jungles of South America and the outback of Australia. Parrots can be recognized by their strong beaks, sturdy legs and curved-clawed feet. These feet have two toes that face forwards, and two that face back. One special ability any true parrot has is the ability to pick things up and hold them with their feet. The Cacatuidae are recognized by their crests of feathers on their head. Parrots eat mostly seeds and dry fruit, but some specialize in eating nectar and softer foods, mostly plants, sometimes bugs. The Cacatuidae are recognized by their crests of feathers on their head. Parrots are one of the most intelligent bird species, along with some other wild birds like crows. Most parrots are adored for their ability to imitate human speech, sometimes perfectly. Parrots are very special, but like most animals some are being hunted to extinction. On this site, you will have the opportunity to learn about five different parrots, and which one would make the best pet for you. Our Five birds are; Quaker parrots, Lovebirds, Parrotlets, Conures, and Cockatiels. Also, there is a page, the How To page that shows you some essential things you need to know to keep your pet happy, and healthy!
