What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a day where people who died in military service are honored and remembered. They do this because the United States does not want those people who died serving their country to have died and be forgotten. They want them to have been remembered and deeply honored with all due respect. They worked for the country and protected it, and should never be forgotten of his/her duty. It is held on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is also known as Decoration Day.

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day started in after the Civil War on May 30th, 1836. They started this holiday to remember and honor the Union Soldiers. Politicians and community leaders speak in front of their people and give a speech about the people who died and how they should honor them.

The United States is not the only country to celebrate Memorial Day. Many other countries do as you will see below, but they don't call it Memorial Day. They call it Remembrance Day.  Memorial Day is one of the longest celebrated traditions, next to the Indianapolis 500.

To celebrate Memorial Day Americans place American flags on top of gravestones at big, national cemeteries. Some people also place American Flags on top of gravestones on their loved ones or family members that died in military service. Many people, usually loved ones or family members of the person who is dead, also decorate the gravestones of the people who died in military service.
