Veterans Day is a holiday in November given to remember the hardships
of soldiers that saw the horrors of war while defending our country.
We remember these men by putting our flag out on this day. This
tradition of putting out the flag is optional for us, but the government
shows its respect by making it mandatory on all government property.
Veterans Day was made in 1918, but not turned into a national holiday
until 1938, in the Act of 1938. Veterans Day was originally known as "Armistice Day," because it was originally made for World War I veterans in 1918. However, in 1954, after WWII requiring the greatest mobilization of soldiers, and after fighting in Korea, the 83rd Congress revised the Act of 1938 changing the word "Armistice" to "Veterans" as to include all veterans. Veterans Day is a day of remembrance, thanking all veterans for risking their lives to protect our freedoms. In The bill, Congress refers to it as "A day to come together with family and friends for the celebration of world peace. On Veterans Day, we have the days off of school, and it is common for veteran organizations to gather and hold ceremonies in their comrades' honor. Veterans Day was started in 1921 when an Unknown Soldier was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. People started celebrating this day as the end of "The Great War" on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. As we had WWII after that, another unknown soldier was laid to rest. As time progressed, more unknown soldiers were added to pay tribute to other wars. As it became clear for this, the was changed to Veterans day. In 1954 President Eisenhower signed a bill making November 11 Veterans Day. But the date was later changed to the fourth Monday in October, but quickly changed back. As it follows, November 11th is known as "Veterans Day" to pay tribute to all fallen and served men and women of the U.S. service. | ||

Military Awards
Military Awards are honors given only to the most distinguished servicemen and women for impressive feats of bravery and valor. The highest of these is the Congressional Medal of Honor, given only to a few thousand people since it was made at the end of the Civil War. The most common of these medals is the Purple Heart, given to any soldier wounded in battle. There are Dozens more honors than I have listed here because I do not have the space of time to put it all here but the Military Awards link I have here and at the bottom of the page shows them all. |
