LZMS South PTO Minutes
October 9, 2008

Lana Fava called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm.

Those present: Lana Fava, Shari Sorrell, Lynn Tsiapas, Patti Schumacher, David Gardner, Denise Zuk, Laurie Finn, Amy Hayes, Carmela Griovinco, Peggy Walding, Nancy McCullough, Linda Sinclair, Eileen Mattison, Vicki Clement, Cindy Miller, Susan Sweeney and Lori Schwartz.


President – Lana Fava
• Motion was made to approve the minutes by Shari Sorrells and seconded by Patti Schumacher.
• The by laws were passed out and Lana asked everyone to look at them to see if there are any updates. We will discuss next month.
• At the PTO presidents meeting Lori Smith from the District Foundation was present. There are 6 student 500.00 grants that will be given to fund projects by student which have a positive impact to improve the environment. Only one student has filled out an application. Deadline for submission is in October or November, checked the website for additional information www.district95foundation.org.
• January 15 is the targeted date of the first report on the redistricting to the school board. The board is scheduled to vote on the proposal at the February meeting.
• All schools with the exception of Charles Quentin are down on fund raising this year.
• A community billboard might be placed on the district web site to show the entire districts fund raising efforts.
• North only has a fund raising drive for donations. They have not started this yet for this year. Lana will bring their results to the next meeting after their drive.
• Teacher redistribution. Everyone that is tenured will be placed first. This will be done by March.
• The LZMSS PTO can no longer use the districts tax id. We will not file for a number. Large amount of record keeping. Best course of action is for us to file as a “Not for Profit
Social Club Corporation.”

Vice President – Shari Sorrells
• Shari has received updates from the Spirtwear committee on their job description. Need updates to job descriptions for all committee’s.

Secretary – Lynn Tsiapas
• No report.

Treasurer – Patti Schumacher
• There is close to $38,000 in our account. There are expenses for spirtwear still to be paid. $1,000.00 and $14,000.00 in magazine expenses. The budget is $18,000.00 and there is a start up balance of $4,000.00. There is $193.60 left to pay on the courtyard. There is checking balance of $1,000.00. The current funds available are –$600.00. There are a lot of big expenses in the spring which will give us some time for additional fund raising.

Principal -- Dave Gardner
• Springfield trip is next week. Almost 100% attendance. 7th graders are excited. 8th graders are going to Washington over Veterans Day holiday.
• Parent conferences 3 evenings. Conference opens next month. Team conferences are encouraged contact one of your team members to schedule a team meeting. The dates for the conferences are November 6th, 18th and 25th.
• Students are to wear their ids at all times around the school, they have lanyards to wear around their neck. They are used for lunch tickets and have speeded up the lunch periods. They will need the ids to get into dances. There were no security instances that started the use of the ids. They can bring other lanyards, but they must be a break away lanyards in order to wear them. You can make it break away on your own with velco. There is no disciplinary action for not wearing your lanyard unless it becomes an issue.
• Coffees with the principal will start this month. They will be monthly. They are very informal. This is a way to ask questions.
• There is no truth to rumor that the school is getting uniforms. There is not really a problem with clothes. If there is a problem the parents are contacted.
• A question was asked about changing the daily announcements web site. The kids do the web site. He will ask Mr. Willard about updating the announcements.

Teacher Rep – Denise Zuk
• The book fair is the week of November 10th and Thanksgiving. Contact the Librarian regarding volunteering to help.

Community Service – Laurie Finn, Cheryl Eisenhuth
• They are already helping the schools Eagle Soars Community Service group. Meagan Carney and Kara Wessman are the teachers that are in charge of the group. The group is going to help with PTO community food drive.

8th Grade Bash – Ann Wayne, Joanne Glatz, Rita Thurston, Anna Venetos

Flower Sale – Jill Davis

Halloween Activity –Kathy Donahue, Janet Peterson, Cheryl Eisenhuth
• No Report

Health & Safety/Character Counts – Amy Haynes, Carmela Giovinco
• The bullying assembly was well received. 10 parents were there. It was a package price for 3 assemblies. There will be an anti bullying assembly every week. We should have an article for the newsletter.
• Red ribbon 23rd to the 31st theme is “Elect to say no”. They will have a banner for the students to sign again. They will get some giveaways for the kids.
• Working with the police department for cyber safety assembly.

Landscaping – Sherri Adelizzi

Magazine Drive – Julie McPeek, Peggy Walding, Nancy McCullough, Linda Sinclair
• There was $54,000.00 sold which includes $6,860.00 in Internet orders. There was $360.00 in Internet orders since last turn in.
• Adding a new turn in date helped with new orders.
• 10% down from budget.
• 50% of school families did not participate.
• 100 kids got dippin dots during additional week promotion.
• Inflatables were done on October 3rd, this went well. October 10th movie day for winning classroom. Regal Theater donated popcorn and the Bear Boosters donated popcorn bags. Rooms 7-3 and 7-4 were the rooms that won.
• October 24th is the Hummer lunch the kids that won will go to Culvers at 11:15. 15 kids won.
• Priviledge cards to go to front of lunch line, no dress for PE, and free entrance to an activity night will be passed out.
• Top teacher team gets bookstore gift cards.
• Dunk tank goal was $60,000.00, only $54,000.00 was sold. The cost for the dunk tank is $200.00. They kids needed to sell 12 orders to participate. 50 kids qualify. Motion was made by Lana and approved by the board to go ahead with the dunk tank.

Market Day –Open
• More people ordered but the amount was still the same.
• Lana has been doing the work; we need someone to work this.

Newsletter – Krisitn Keramidas
• October 16th is the next date for the newsletter.

Parent University – Eileen Mattison
• Wednesday November 5th is the date for Parent University #1. This is a free seminar and will be from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. at Middle School North. This seminar is geared toward middle school kids. You should pre-register for this.
• Parent University is February 28th and will be from 8:30a.m. to 12:30 p.m...
There will be 12 sessions. Charge will be about $15.00 dollars there will be no meal only snacks.

Publicity – Susan McIlwain
• No report

Spiritwear – Laura Dawson, Sharon Callard
• They just received the order and will be distributed tomorrow.
• It will be up to their discretion for a Xmas sale.

Student Supply Box – Vicki Clement, Cindy Miller
• The lists will be more specific for next year.

Volunteer –Sheryl Durment, Lee Carlson, Susan Sweeney
• The buzz book winner was Vanessa P 2nd place was Rachel Hand 3rd place Teagan H all students will receive a Halloween cup with goodies. Assembly of the buzz book will be next week; it will be distributed the week of October 20th.
