May Whitney is dedicated to strengthening our community of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.  We will build a strong foundation of good character by introducing one pillar each month, while continuing to encourage the display of those already introduced.   The integration of the pillars will be incorporated naturally into the existing curriculum.  We will emphasize each pillar through class discussions, children's literature, skits & plays, creative writing and daily teachable moments.  CC! will permeate all aspects of the student's school day including their specials; Art, LMC, PE and Music as well as recess and lunch time.

All members of our May Whitney community are participants in the facilitation and reinforcement of Character Counts!.  Participants include teachers, parents, community members, administrators, secretaries, support staff, lunch/recess supervisors, custodians and of course the students themselves.  It is wonderful when the children recognize and reinforce good character traits in one another.  Children will be recognized for their displays of good character traits in special and unique ways within their individual classrooms.  The main point is not to give & get rewards but rather to create an intrinsic desire within the students to exhibit good character.  Our main goal of implementing Character Counts! at May Whitney is to create a generation of children who yearn to be people of good character most significantly because it makes them feel good inside.  We hope to continue to motivate children through praise and reinforcement and diminish the desire for constant extrinsic rewards (to do something to get a "thing").
