Welcome to Mrs. Ury's web page!  :-)  Here, you can find information about May Whitney School and Mrs. Ury's ESL classes.  English as a Second Language classes (ESL) are taught in English, with primary language support when necessary (in Spanish).

Through a variety of hands-on activities, as well as songs, guided reading and cooperative learning groups students learn and improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English.  Every year in the spring, students take the ACCESS Test for English Language Learners (ELL) in order to assess their learned English growth and to help place them in their correct English levels for the following year.  In addition, students take the IMAGE (Illinois Measure of Annual Growth in English), a standardized test to measure English growth based on reading and math skills.

If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please call me at: (847) 540-5364, and I will return your call as soon as possible.  Also, we love to have parents volunteer in our classroom!  If you would like to volunteer to be a guest reader, or to help out in the classroom, please call me at the above number, and we'll invite you over! :-)

In January and February we will be preparing for the IMAGE test in math and reading.  Students will be required to answer math questions in complete sentences and explain how and why they got the answers they did with each problem.
