Reading Tricks

Before you read:
1. Look at the cover and make some predictions about the
story.
2. Take a "picture walk". Looking at the pictures will help
you make more predictions about the story.
If you get stuck on a word:
1. Use the pictures.
2. Make the sound of the first letter and think of what
makes sense.
3. Chunk It—Break the word into smaller pieces and then
sound it out.
4. Read with your finger.
5. Go back to the beginning. Reread skipping the tricky
word.
6. Backtrack--Read it again.
7. Say the beginning sound, and read the rest of the
sentence.
8. Thinkof what it could be. What would make sense?
After you read:
1. Check your predictions.
2. Talk about the story with a friend.
3. Reread the story often. Reading a story many times will
help you grow as a reader.
