Seal of Biliteracy - Lake Zurich High School

Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, Lake Zurich High School will award the State of Illinois Seal of Biliteracy in recognition of Lake Zurich High School students who have studied and attained proficiency in two languages by their high school graduation.  Students must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English as well as reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language.

To qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy, students must meet the identified criteria.  Approved assessments include the ACT, SAT, AP language tests, or the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL).

To earn the Seal of Biliteracy a combination of two of the following are needed:

  • SAT in EBRW (English Based Reading and Writing) score of 540
  • ACT English score of 21
  • AP Language score of 4 or 5
  • AAPPL (ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Language) score of Intermediate-5 (I-5) or better. I-5 reflects Intermediate High abilities. This means that a learner who receives the score of I-5, in addition to performing all Intermediate level functions fully, also shows some performance at the Advanced level, but does not do so consistently

The Seal is affixed to the diploma and designated on the transcript.  It encourages students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills students attain, and is evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices.  This is an example of Lake Zurich schools living its mission to empower every learner to achieve personal excellence.

Lake Zurich High School currently offers French, German, and Spanish as world language courses. Awarding the Seal of Biliteracy recognizes the value of language and diversity in our community and acknowledges the high level of skill required for students to attain biliteracy.  Biliteracy prepares students with 21st century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society.
