Character Counts! at Spencer Loomis
Character Counts! is one of the most complete character building programs available to schools and other organizations. The program helps to instill wonderful values in students by educating them using fun activities and other resources. The program is based on six "pillars" of character. Spencer Loomis Elementary School takes character very seriously and is excited to offer this outstanding program to our students and community.
This program is most effective when parents, school, and community join together to model, teach, and set expectations for the display of character and behavior that we all value. One of the core philosophies behind Character Counts! states:
"The character and conduct of our youth reflect the character and conduct of society: therefore, every adult has the responsibility to teach and model the core ethical values and every social institution has the responsibility to promote the development of good character."
The six pillars of character emphasized are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Using the first letter of each character trait, we can make the acronym T.R.R.F.C.C. (Sounds like “Terrific”). This acronym will be used to help your child remember the six character traits that will help him/her to be a “ T.R.R.F.C.C. ” person. We will build a strong foundation by introducing one pillar at a time while continuing to encourage the display of those already introduced. Each month is listed below along with its pillar:
September: Responsibility
October: Respect
November: Citizenship
December / January: Caring
February / March: Trustworthiness
April / May: Fairness
