February, 2005
The art classes at Spencer Loomis have been creating small ceramic bowls to promote awareness of hunger in our community and throughout the world. The concept originated in a high school in Michigan as a way to raise funds to support a food drive. Guests were served a simple meal of soup and bread, and were invited to purchase the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world. Funds were donated to food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. All students at Spencer Loomis are creating the bowls in art class. The art parents will be helping the students decorate their bowls on their regular visits to the classrooms during the month of February. Students will also be learning about good nutrition. Spencer Loomis will be sponsoring an Empty Bowls project at Open House, April 20th. Parents will have the opportunity to purchase their child’s bowl and bowls of donated soup at the April 20th Open House. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to a local food pantry that services all of Lake County. Further information about Empty Bowls can be viewed at:
